Greenock Cut Visitor Centre

Situated in the heart of Inverclyde’s reservoir area, surrounded by moorland and with panoramic views from Dunrod Hill (298m) or along the Greenock Cut (180m), the Visitor Centre with exhibition and cafe is a great starting point for all the family to get outdoors to enjoy all the water, walks and wildlife in the area.

Inside the Visitor Centre the interactive 'Greenock Cut Exhibition' tells the story of the Greenock Cut. Swallowcam (swallows on TV during the nesting season) is popular with children and adults alike. The Rangers provide information on local wildlife sightings, walks and cycle routes.

The Countryside Ranger Service run a schools programme plus family friendly events as well as host temporary exhibitions and displays throughout the year. The meeting room is used by schools but can also be hired for meetings or birthday parties.

Signs of the Roman occupation exist in the area including hill forts and roads.

The Greenock Cut Visitor Centre is the starting point for several walks:

  • The Greenock Cut Walk is rated as one of the top 50 walks in Scotland. This historic canal is a scheduled ancient monument that took water from Loch Thom to Greenock and provides a level path with fantastic panoramic views across the Clyde.

  • The Kelly Cut Walk is similar, it leads to Wemyss Bay.

  • The Nature Trail is a family friendly 2.5km circular route that includes part of the Cuts, the special woods in Shielhill Glen (SSSI) and the open moorland.

  • The Mini Trail a short 300m meander on a path suitable for wheel chairs and those with special needs, the trail goes through woodland past a pond ideal for pond dipping with the Rangers.

Leaflets for these walks can be pickup at the Visitor Centre.

The Visitor Centre is open daily in summer (Easter to mid October) and at weekends in winter.

The walks and trails are open all year round. The Rangers are based at the Centre all year round and try and ensure the toilets are open even if the Visitor Centre is not.

The Greenock Cut Visitor Centre located at the north end of Clyde Muirshiel Regional Park, Scotland’s largest Regional Park.
